Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement is responsible for supporting efforts to strengthen and sustain lifelong relationships between the University and its alumni. Reporting to the Associate Director for External Affairs, this position contributes to the planning and execution of strategic alumni engagement initiatives, including alumni experiences, volunteer leadership development, and programming for students and young alumni. The role also supports the promotion and preservation of pride, traditions, and reinforcing alumni connection and institutional loyalty.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Plan and execute alumni events and programs that foster connection, pride, and engagement with Southern Miss, both on campus and in the community.
* Track participation and engagement outcomes in Salesforce CRM and contribute to continuous improvement of alumni programs.
* Recruit, train, support, and steward alumni volunteers and leaders in alignment with Southern Miss priorities, traditions, and initiatives.
* Collaborate with regional Hubs and campus partners to ensure engagement efforts support the university's mission and goals.
* Develop programs for recent graduates to encourage early involvement, networking, and long-term affinity with the university.
* Manage, develop, and grow programs such as the Student Alumni Association, Alumni Ambassadors, and the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Council.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required, along with two (2) to four (4) years of professional experience in alumni relations, higher education, or a related field. The successful candidate must have experience working with volunteers, advisory boards, or leadership groups and demonstrate strong relationship-building, communication, and organizational skills. The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed is also required.

* Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
* Demonstrated ability to build relationships and effectively steward volunteers and stakeholders.
* Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess situations and recommend practical solutions.
* Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, business correspondence, and procedural documentation.
* Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
* Ability to interpret and apply instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form in environments with limited standardization.
Preferred Qualifications
A master's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university is preferred. A demonstrated passion for The University of Southern Mississippi and the Golden Eagle community is also preferred.
