TITLE:

COUNSELOR

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Two years of teaching experience preferred
2. Hold standard teaching license and a master's degree in guidance and counseling

SUPERVISES: N/A JOB GOAL:

To promote the successful academic, social, physical and emotional development of the student; serves as a liaison among students, parents and school staff to assure the maximum development of the students; assist students in understanding themselves by focusing attention on interests, abilities and needs in relation to home and school

TYPICAL

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Such duties and responsibilities that may be assigned, including but not limited to:

Develops and implements a guidance program that addresses student and instructional program needs

Services as school level Early Warning System Team Coordinator

Provides individual and group counseling with students and consultation with parents, teachers, administrators, and agency personnel

Interprets test data to students, parents, teachers, administrators and other staff members

Plans jointly with teachers' remediation for student problems that interfere with mastery of basic skills

Provides referral, placement and follow-up assistance when needed

Handles record keeping and other routine duties in an accurate and timely manner

Serves as school site point of contact for homeless and foster care students

Maintains professional competence through ongoing professional learning and continuously evaluates and improves the school counseling program to meet the needs of students, staff, and the community.

Develop and monitor individual graduation and promotion plans for students requiring additional academic support.

Identifies students at risk of retention or failure to graduate and develops, implements, and monitors intervention plans, including remediation, credit recovery, and other support services.

Provides academic advisement and course selection guidance to assist students in achieving promotion and graduation requirements while making informed educational and career decisions.

Assist school administration in achieving district goals related to student promotion, graduation rates, and college and career readiness.

Collaborates and communicates with students, parents, teachers, and administrators regarding promotion and graduation requirements and strategies to address barriers to student success.

Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance

Supports the Hattiesburg Public School District Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan

Performs other duties as assigned
