Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Coding and CDI, the Coding Manager oversees all aspects of ICD-10-CM, ICD
10-PCS,CPT, and HCPCS code assignments for the hospital and physician clinics. Responsible for ensuring accurate data collection and DRG, APC, physician CPT charges, and other designated assignments for proper reimbursement. Day to day management of all Coding staff. Responsible for hiring, monitoring productivity and quality and appropriately addressing any variances. Provides educational opportunities and conducts coding data educational sessions for the hospital and coding staff.
Serves as a hospital resource for coding questions and issues. Monitors the coding bill hold and DNFB for revenue cycle and takes necessary action for the resolution of aging accounts within established targets. Serves as a liaison to Case Management. Communicates with physician billing department to resolve coding issues for physician charges, denials, and edits. Assists the coding aspect of CDM maintenance for Forrest Health.
Works closely with Corporate Compliance to ensure adherence to HIM compliance plan and RAC Audit requirements. Assists with meeting Department operations budget and other special projects.
- Manage the operations of the coding section of Health information Management Services, assuring customer expectations, performance standards, strategic objectives, and compliance standards are being met.
- Supervise staff to include hiring, orientation, monitoring performance, counseling, discipline, staff development, work assignment, etc.
- Continuously improve processes to assure they are efficient and effective, and meet departmental and organizational expectations.
- Demonstrate a leadership style that results in productive, engaged employees and improved relationships with customers (including physicians.)
Bachelor of Science Degree or Associate degree in Health Information Management) or equivalent and experience) required.
Work ExperienceThree or more years coding supervisory experience in an acute care facility preferred. Working knowledge of health information systems with experience in computerized software environment required. Extensive experience with actual coding and auditing patient records required. Experience using database spreadsheets and PC software applications (Access, Excel, Word, Microsoft office, etc.) required.
Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or CCS, or CIC required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to facilitate education and understanding of coding, documentation, and reimbursement requirements for various levels of staff, providers and other data users. Attention to detail needed with analytical ability to interpret data and reports. Must have leadership skills to effectively and efficiently manage staff with ability to multi-task in a high stress environment. Proficient in PC Software (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, etc.)
Must be organized with ability to plan, direct and execute in a timely manner. Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.
