Job SummaryPerforms manual cleaning of the assigned building(s). Uses proper methods and materials in cleaning and care for the building area and equipment, participates in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of the buildings that are assigned, completing all tasks including football, baseball, work orders, etc. as assigned.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities- Perform manual cleaning of the assigned building(s) using proper methods and materials.
- Show knowledge of equipment such as commercial vacuum cleaners (uprights and backpack vacuums), wet/dry vac, backpack blower, shower machine, and carpet machines.
- Sweep, mop, and scrub floors; clean classrooms including desks, tables, chalkboards, white‑boards, and erasers; wash windows, walls, blinds, trash cans, air‑conditioning grills, glass, and doors.
- Cleans bathrooms, replenishes supplies, cleans drinking fountains, and polishes brass and stainless steel.
- Empty trash inside and outside buildings; sweep entrances, outside steps, ramps, sidewalks, and building signs; clean entrances, including windows, door areas, and entrance mats; sweep and mop stairwells; vacuum carpeted areas.
- Cleans large public areas such as football stadium, basketball coliseum, baseball stadium, and Bennett Auditorium, as well as areas used for special events before and after events.
- Unlock buildings and clean other areas as assigned in coverage zones.
- Respond to emergency situations during and after hours, such as property damage, personal injury, water leaks, flooding, overflowing restroom fixtures, broken window or door glass, and accidents involving bodily fluids (blood, vomit waste, and urine).
- Serve as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and participate in pre‑emergency preparations and post‑emergency recovery efforts as directed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by Custodial Leadership.
High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of university policies and procedures, professional standards, and regulations.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, and the use of custodial materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
- Ability to manage one’s own time while completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to listen to, understand, and follow instructions.
- Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
- Ability to react and respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
- Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
- Ability to operate a personal computer with a general understanding of application software and the internet.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
Three (3) months of related experience in a higher education setting or commercial cleaning environment.
