The Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) functions under the direct supervision of the Surgery Manager. The Patient Care Coordinator serves as a role model and a coach to the entire Operating Room (OR) Team. The primary duty of the Patient Care Coordinator is efficient operating room coordination to ensure prompt, safe, effective throughput of the surgical patient. This position is responsible for the daily management and coordination of operating room assignments, ensuring proper staff skill mix and equipment coordination.

The PCC serves as the central point of contact for surgeons, anesthesia, and surgery staff, and coordinates the care of the surgical patient with ancillary departments including but not limited to:
Inpatient Units, Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, Endoscopy, Radiology, Cardiac Cath Lab, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
  • Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs.
  • Demonstrates the critical‑thinking skills to respond in an emergency situation.
  • Maintains current status in all educational offerings of the hospital and department.
  • Coordinates with Anesthesia Supervisor and surgeons regarding the running of the operative schedule and ensuring appropriate staffing is available for schedule changes throughout the day.
  • Adjusts the assignments of the Surgery staff to facilitate the flow of the schedule. Oversees Surgery staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of patient care according to identified patients’ needs.
  • Communicates with other hospital departments, as necessary, in order to resolve operational problems and make most effective use of hospital resources in delivering quality patient care.
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities including: promoting situational awareness, assisting with audits as needed, and using teachable moments.
  • Implements measures to prevent exposure to infection pathogens and communicable conditions; and to promote a safe and confidential environment for the patient and staff.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff.
  • Fosters staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, providing rationale when appropriate and supporting departmental and organizational goals.
  • Anticipates the needs of the staff members and proactively offers assistance.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by taking ownership of time management, decreasing waste of both time and supplies, and promoting cost effectiveness.
