Job Summary

The Qualitative Research Scientist provides scientific expertise in the design, implementation, and dissemination of community‑engaged research initiatives aimed at reducing health inequities. This position will help carry out rigorous qualitative and mixed‑methods research studies in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and community partners, ensuring reciprocal engagement and culturally responsive practices. The Qualitative Research Scientist translates findings into publications and policy recommendations that advance equitable health outcomes across diverse populations, particularly within the southeastern United States.

Primary

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establishes, cultivates, and sustains reciprocal partnerships with historically marginalized communities, public agencies, healthcare systems, and grassroots organizations to inform study design and implementation.
  • Manages qualitative and mixed‑methods research studies conducted across communities in the southeastern region.
  • Conducts data collection using advanced qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including interviews, focus groups, participatory methods, and survey‑based approaches.
  • Synthesizes findings into peer‑reviewed publications, technical reports, grant deliverables, and policy briefs, translating results into actionable recommendations to inform equitable health policy and practice.
  • Engages with multi‑ and interdisciplinary research teams across institutions and geographies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree (PhD) from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Nutrition, or a closely related discipline, with formal training in qualitative and community‑engaged research methodologies; and five (5) years of post‑doctoral, full‑time research experience in public health or a related field, including at least three (3) years leading qualitative and community‑based research focused on health disparities or health equity.

  • Advanced knowledge of qualitative and mixed‑method research methodologies, including participatory and community‑based approaches.
  • Publication record and experience disseminating findings to both academic and community audiences.
  • Ability to build and sustain reciprocal, trust‑based relationships with marginalized communities, public agencies, and institutional partners.
  • Experience working in rural and resource‑limited environments.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple research priorities and meet grant‑driven deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
