Responsibilities and Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: A Mississippi teaching license in an academic subject area; CDL license or ability to secure CDL license; ability to organize and supervise a total sports program; prior successful coaching experience; knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and commitment to ongoing learning; ability to be a positive role model for student athletes.

REPORTS TO: The principal in conjunction with the athletic director.

SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training for individual and team success, and to model behaviors that promote good sportsmanship, character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment. To upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

GENERAL: The success of athletic programs influences the community''s image of the school system. The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process considerations. The job description aims to guide function; coaches should exercise common sense and good judgment in unlisted cases.

Responsibilities
  • Has thorough knowledge of athletic policies approved by the Newton Municipal School District Board of Education and implements them with the staff.
  • Knowledge of system, state and league regulations; implement and interpret them for staff.
  • Understands proper administrative chain of command and routes requests or grievances through proper channels; aware of meetings requiring attendance.
  • Staff Responsibilities
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught; design conferences, clinics and staff meetings.
  • Train and inform staff; encourage professional growth through clinic attendance per local policy.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff at season’s end.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances and promote morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Administrative Duties
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournaments and events.
  • Prepare for events and adhere to facility times; coordinate with maintenance and school staff.
  • Provide documentation for state and system requirements (physical exams, parental consent, eligibility).
  • Safeguard equipment; manage storage and maintenance; annual inventory.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy or procedural changes.
  • Student Responsibilities
  • Mentor athletes to develop character traits (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship).
  • Monitor grades and conduct.
  • Provide guidance and safeguards during practices, games and travel.
  • Communicate rules and regulations to athletes.
  • Address injuries, medical attention and emergencies; complete injury paperwork within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline procedures and involve parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced education planning.
  • Finance and Equipment
  • Participate in budgeting with the athletic director; establish equipment needs for next season and ensure spending within budget.
  • Account for all equipment; manage inventory and returns; issue, store and recondition equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify equipment; monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; control access.
  • Ensure athletes stay in authorized areas; inspect locker rooms for cleanliness; maintain sport equipment.
  • Secure building when leaving; instill respect for equipment and property.
