Science Teacher – Haverhill High School

Position:
High School Science Teacher (Chemistry or Biology 8‑12, SEI Endorsement required). Work year:
August‑June. Effective date:
September 1, 2026. Salary: $56,473 – $112,526 per year. Full‑time.

Responsibilities
  • Curriculum and Planning
    • Design units of instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks that align with state standards and local curricula.
    • Develop well‑structured lessons with clear objectives, appropriate student engagement strategies, pacing, materials, and technologies.
    • Create differentiated learning experiences to meet the developmental levels and learning styles of all students.
  • Assessment
    • Design and administer informal and formal assessments, including common interim assessments, to evaluate student learning and progress.
    • Analyze assessment results to determine progress toward intended outcomes and adjust instructional practice or interventions accordingly.
  • Analysis
    • Use assessment data to identify student learning gaps and share findings with colleagues.
    • Provide descriptive feedback and engage students and families in constructive conversations about improving performance.
  • Instruction
    • Set high expectations for student work and perseverance, providing exemplars, rubrics, and guided practice.
    • Employ motivational and engaging instructional practices appropriate for most students.
    • Use tiered instruction, scaffolds, and other strategies to support diverse learning needs, including ELL and students with disabilities.
  • Learning Environment
    • Establish rituals and routines that maintain a safe physical and intellectual environment.
    • Build students’ interpersonal and group communication skills, providing diverse peer learning opportunities.
    • Encourage students to identify strengths, interests, and needs, take academic risks, and challenge themselves.
  • Cultural Proficiency
    • Use strategies that respect and affirm students’ differences related to background, identity, and language.
    • Respond appropriately to conflicts arising from differences in backgrounds or languages.
  • Expectations
    • Clearly communicate and enforce specific standards for student work, effort, and behavior.
    • Model and reinforce effective effort, adapting instruction, materials, and assessments to make challenging material accessible to all students.
  • Family and Community Engagement
    • Support all families in active participation in the classroom and school community.
    • Provide clear, user‑friendly expectations for learning and behavior and maintain consistent two‑way communication with families.
  • Reflection
    • Regularly reflect on lessons, units, and interactions to improve practice and student learning.
    • Set challenging, measurable professional development and student learning goals based on self‑assessment and student data.
  • Professional Growth
    • Seek out and apply ideas from supervisors, colleagues, and professional development to enhance practice and possibly assume additional instructional or leadership responsibilities.
  • Collaboration with Colleagues
    • Collaborate with peers on developing standards‑based units, analyzing student work, and planning interventions.
  • Decision‑Making
    • Contribute relevant expertise to school, department, and grade‑level planning and decision making.
  • Shared Responsibility
    • Reinforce school‑wide behavior and learning expectations for all students and share responsibility for meeting their needs.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Perform instructional and general duties as directed by the Principal, Curriculum Supervisor, Superintendent, or designee, and in accordance with policy.

Qualifications
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education in Chemistry or Biology 8‑12; SEI Endorsement required.
  • Proficiency demonstrated through transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work in the relevant fields.
  • Knowledge of high‑school philosophy, organization, and curricula.
  • Understanding of high‑school students and adolescent needs.
  • Knowledge of recommended instructional practices for high school science.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent.
