Position SummaryThe Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, servicing, and repairing the Township's fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment. This includes fire apparatus, sanitation trucks, dump trucks, police vehicles, recreation vehicles, and various pieces of heavy equipment. The position requires strong technical skills, diagnostic abilities, and a commitment to preventative maintenance and safety.
The successful candidate will work independently and as part of a team to ensure Township vehicles and equipment remain safe, dependable, and operational.
Essential Functions- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on all Township-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel-powered engines, drive trains, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, brakes, steering, suspension systems, and related components.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on fire apparatus, sanitation trucks, highway dump trucks, police vehicles, recreation vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Utilize scan tools, laptops, and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues.
- Conduct Pennsylvania state inspections and ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards.
- Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, grinding, and modification work as needed to maintain and repair equipment.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance needs and recommend repairs.
- Maintain accurate service, maintenance, and repair records.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency repair situations as needed.
- Participate in snow and emergency operations that may require extended work hours.
- Attend required training programs and maintain professional certifications.
- Follow all safety procedures and properly utilize required personal protective equipment.
- Perform other Public Works-related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Formal educational training in vehicle maintenance.
- Minimum five (5) years of mechanic experience.
- Valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Pennsylvania State Inspection License, Class 7.
- Candidates must provide and maintain their own tools.
- Knowledge of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
- Understanding of electric and hybrid vehicle technology.
- Proficiency using scan tools, diagnostic software, and related equipment.
- Experience servicing and repairing vehicle air conditioning systems.
- Basic welding and fabrication skills, including MIG, TIG, ARC welding, cutting, and grinding.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to safety, professionalism, and customer service.
- Willingness to attend training and continue developing technical skills.
Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (40 hours per week)
This position also requires:
- 24-hour on-call availability.
- Participation in emergency operations.
- Overtime as needed during winter storms, emergencies, or operational demands.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, climbing, and twisting throughout the workday.
- Frequent movement in and out of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Ability to climb ladders and work in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
