Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE)

The Office of the Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE) at Montana State University‑Northern (MSUN) seeks applications for the Dean position. This position is a 12‑month, full‑time professional appointment and is eligible for MUS benefits.

General Statement

The Dean serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education and makes academic and administrative decisions and recommendations pertaining to College offerings and operations at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and within the College’s Continuing Education program. As a key member of the Provost’s leadership team, the Dean reports to and works with the Provost and Senior Vice‑Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Dean oversees strategic planning budgets; fundraising; curriculum; continuing education; student recruitment and retention; faculty and staff recruitment, development, support, evaluation, and retention; program development; assessment and reporting; accreditation activities; administration; and community outreach.

Priorities of the College include further strengthening research and graduate education, fostering a first‑class undergraduate education experience within the College, reinforcing positive relationships with stakeholders in the community, and partnering with key entities across the university to foster learner success. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee all administrative operations of the College.
  • Ensure College‑level compliance with all relevant collective bargaining agreements and university policy.
  • Lead College faculty and staff in developing and implementing a College‑level strategic plan that supports the university’s strategic plan and identifies measurable goals and objectives for ongoing assessment.
  • Oversee, support, and work closely with the College Chair(s) to ensure high‑level performance of Chair duties as detailed in Section 6.5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement

  • Guide academic departments in the development of new academic programs as well as updates to, and innovation in, existing programs at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Assist academic departments within CASE in setting and meeting goals for student enrollment, retention, graduation, and academic performance.
  • Lead faculty in programmatic assessment and accreditation and re‑accreditation processes with NWCCU and programmatic accrediting agencies (e.g., OPI, CAEP, and CACREP).
  • Identify and address faculty and students needs related to technological resources for teaching and learning and for research and scholarship.
  • Represent the College and provide leadership in university‑level planning and evaluation activities.
  • Expand and enhance the College’s presence in the larger community via outreach, partnerships, and recruiting activities including collaboration with other state and tribal colleges and universities.
  • Collaborate with the Northern Alumni Foundation and other personnel in fundraising efforts to strategically develop resources for the College and the institution.
  • Serve as an integral part of the Provost’s senior leadership team.
  • Encourage, support, and enhance faculty and staff professional and leadership development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education in one of the disciplines or professions within the college.
  • A record as an accomplished administrator reflecting progressively responsible leadership roles in higher education.
  • A professional record that meets the standard for faculty tenure at MSU‑Northern.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previously tenured at a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with constituencies.
  • A record of budget management, personnel management, strategic planning, and data‑informed decision making.
