Position Summary
Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities. They implement statutes, rules and regulations related to environmental sanitation and safety programs concerning foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. The role focuses on identifying, mitigating, and preventing disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and misbranded products.
Responsibilities- Conduct inspections, investigations, and audits of food, drug, and medical device establishments.
- Identify, mitigate, and prevent disease transmission caused by improper food handling, contaminated water, and adulterated or misbranded products.
- Issue citations for violations and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide education and enforcement activities to comply with statutes, rules, and regulations related to environmental sanitation.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in the physical or biological sciences.
- Legal Authorization to Work: Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
- No experience required for Level I.
- Six (6) months of professional inspectional or investigational work experience required for Level II, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of public health regulations, bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.
- Relevant substitutions may apply.
- Level I: $4,368 per month (SR‑16, Step D) effective July 1, 2026.
- Level II: $4,725 per month (SR‑18, Step D) effective July 1, 2026.
