Salary: $5,107 to $6,221 per month (SR-20, Step D to I) – Effective July 1, 2026.

Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement. Responsibilities include implementing statutes, rules, and regulations related to environmental sanitation, safety programs concerning foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. Work in this series includes identifying, mitigating, and preventing disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration/misbranding of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.

Perform the full range of independent environmental sanitation work assignments in a defined geographic or specialty area. Apply all phases of the sanitation sciences, understand socioeconomic conditions in the surveillance area, and exercise tact in enforcement and interpretation of sanitation laws, rules, and regulations.

• Legal authorization to work under Hawaii state regulations.
• Bachelor's degree in one of the physical or biological sciences from an accredited four‑year college or university.
  Must attach official transcript(s).
• One and a half (1½) years of professional inspectional or investigational work in public health, demonstrating knowledge of environmental health programs, regulations, and working knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.
