Job Overview

Remote, Southeast – Organ Recovery Surgeons (Thoracic Transplant). This role supports, organizes, and directs the Vituity HEART Thoracic Donor Organ Transplant Recovery Program, focusing on procurement of donor heart and lung grafts for thoracic transplantation.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate liaison activities between Administration, Surgical Staff, Medical Staff, and performance measurement for procurement of donor heart and lung grafts.
  • Develop and implement protocols, research initiatives, and quality improvement activities for thoracic donor procurement.
  • Adhere to all applicable State, Federal, and local laws, as well as Vituity‑contracted Hospital System policies.
  • Maintain compliance with ISHLT, UNOS, OPOs surveys, and laboratory data collection requirements.
  • Assist with preparation for federal, state, or JCAHO inspections.
  • Promote quality assurance through education and improvement activities, linking concepts with practice.
  • Facilitate financial and operational efficiencies related to donor procurement.
  • Coordinate hospital training for nursing staff and transplant coordinators on donor thoracic transplant care.
  • Ensure availability of tissue typing and organ procurement services.
  • Supervise donor heart and lung transplant procurement, ensuring qualified surgeons or direct oversight.
  • Participate in hospital and Medical Staff committees addressing thoracic transplant donor issues.
  • Review operations, policies, procedures, and staff training, including disaster preparedness.
  • Attend applicable safety education sessions and follow safety standards in all functions.
Required Experience & Competencies
  • Board Certified or Eligible Thoracic Surgery physician.
  • Valid medical license in one of the contiguous United States.
  • Graduation from a Thoracic training program prior to 1990 with minimum seven (7) years of thoracic transplant surgery experience, ORnewly graduated within the time specified by the American Board of Medical Specialists and Medical Staff by‑laws.
  • Current professional knowledge in thoracic transplant care: at least 12 CME credits in thoracic OR surgery every three years, plus one year of formalized thoracic transplantation training.
  • Minimum two years documented experience in a UNOS‑approved transplant program.
  • History of pre‑operative and post‑operative patient care for at least 10–20 heart or lung transplants in an UNOS‑approved program and a cumulative total of 20 thoracic transplants over more than two years.
  • Preferred: one additional year of formalized thoracic transplantation training or two years documented experience in a program that meets UNOS membership qualifications, with a cumulative experience of at least 20 thoracic transplants over two years.
