The mission of Health Services is to create the best possible experience for every patient in a Christ-centered environment. The Physician supports this mission by supervising clinical staff, providing high-quality, evidence-based medical care, and working with the Director of the Health Center to deliver cost-effective services for both patients and the Health Center. The Physician is expected to maximize clinically appropriate services within the Health Center to improve access, continuity of care, and affordability while supporting cost containment through an understanding of the benefits and exclusions of the DMBA Student Benefits Plan.

What you'll do in this position:

  • Provides medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in both clinic and ambulatory settings and responds to questions over the telephone.
  • Documents all findings, consultations, treatments, and diagnoses.
  • Reviews documentation and makes corrections as needed.
  • Collaborates with Student Counseling to manage mental health issues for students.
  • Serves as the industrial and athletic physician for BYU-H.
  • Serves on clinic or campus committees as assigned.
  • Provides comprehensive primary care and performs office-based procedures within the scope of training, credentialing, and Health Center privileges to improve continuity of care, reduce unnecessary referrals, and minimize patient costs.
  • Provides preventive care, health education, and counseling to support student wellness and disease prevention.

Medical Supervisory of Clinical Staff

  • Supervises clinical staff regarding staffing, training, and the handling of patient complaints.
  • Oversees laboratory services, immunizations and limited dispensary services.
  • Administers proper quality controls and procedures.
  • Participates in reviews and revisions of policies and procedures, practice guidelines, and protocols.
  • Maintains licensure, credentialing, and continuing medical education through professional development, current medical literature, and CME activities.
  • Oversees services provided by itinerant clinicians.
  • Stays abreast of changes in the center's electronic medical records system.
  • Promotes a positive image of the Health Center and University and relates well with university employees.
  • Adheres to university standards and policies.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of clinical services that safely expand the Health Center's capabilities, improve patient access, and promote cost-effective care.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

What qualifies you for this role:

  • Must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school and have completed an accredited residency in Family Medicine or a closely related primary care specialty. Demonstrated experience providing comprehensive primary care in an outpatient setting is required.
  • The Physician must be competent in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic medical conditions and in performing office-based procedures commonly encountered in family medicine. Expected procedural competencies include, but are not limited to:
    • Electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation
    • Trigger point injections
    • Skin punch, shave, and excisional biopsies
    • Excision of benign skin lesions
    • Incision and drainage of abscesses
    • Laceration repair
    • Wound care and wound management
    • Pelvic examinations and common office gynecologic procedures
    • Fracture management, including casting and splinting
    • Ear irrigation
    • Joint injections and aspirations, when credentialed
    • Chronic disease management
    • Behavioral health screening, assessment, and management within the scope of primary care

Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in primary care medicine with sound clinical judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records, quality improvement, patient documentation, and evidence-based practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to supervise clinical staff, collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Maintain patient confidentiality, and foster a patient-centered, Christ-centered environment.
