Duties SummaryThis class reflects the working supervisor over a small staff of lower‑level Corrections Education Specialist positions. These positions are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, coordinating, and evaluating the activities of an education program of moderate size and scope in a correctional facility, in addition to performing educational case‑management services for inmates comparable to the journey‑level class, Corrections Education Specialist III; and performing other related duties as assigned.
The Corrections Education Specialist III is responsible for independently identifying inmates' educational needs through academic and/or vocational testing and assessment; developing individualized educational plans; coordinating educational activities; monitoring, evaluating, and documenting inmates' progress; and modifying their educational plans as necessary.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsLegal Authorization To Work
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the state government to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Education
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four‑year college or university.
General Experience
One and one‑half (1‑½) years of progressively responsible professional teaching experience that involved developing lesson plans, providing instruction, assessing students' progress, and modifying plans to address progress. Such experience must have involved demonstrated knowledge of the application of principles and practices of education and learning, as well as instructional methods and materials.
Specialized Experience
One (1) year of progressively responsible professional teaching experience in a corrections education program that provided knowledge of the legislative mandates, statutes, and policies relating to the educational requirements of inmates, as well as the activities, goals, objectives, laws, rules, regulations, and procedures of a corrections education program. The work must also have provided knowledge of related programs and activities in educational institutions, community resources, agencies, and federal and state agencies involved with educational issues.
- One (1) year of General or Specialized Experience is defined as a school year of approximately 180 teacher duty days or roughly 38 weeks per year.
Supervisory Aptitude
Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted. This requirement will be considered met when there is strong affirmative evidence of the necessary supervisory abilities and/or potential.

Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
Other Requirements
All applicants who are conditionally offered employment or conditionally approved for movement into this position shall be subject to drug screening, as required by Federal, State or local laws, or departmental policy; and will be subject to an intensive background check. Drug testing must be paid for by the applicant.
