Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education requires a Bachelor's Degree for all teacher, librarian, or counselor positions, except designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) roles. If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you must obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license within three years. You must enroll in a program that continues your employment and, each year, demonstrate active pursuit of meeting Hawaii licensing requirements set by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.

Upon hire, a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit is required.

Valid Hawaiian Immersion license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.

Fluent in the Hawaiian language.

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods after their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of each month.

• Compensation: 10‑month teachers are compensated according to the Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule.
• 18 days of paid sick leave and state/federal holidays. Six of these may be used for personal or professional development during the school year.
• Health insurance:
  If eligible, the State pays a portion of the premiums for a state-sponsored medical, drug, vision, and adult dental plan.
• Group life insurance:
  The State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees.
• Premium conversion plan:
  Eligible employees may increase take‑home pay by allowing the State to deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes are withheld.
• Flexible spending accounts:
  Eligible employees can reduce federal, state, and social security taxes through a tax‑savings benefit program.
• Retirement plan:
  The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least ten years of credited service and who have reached 62 or have 30 years of credited service and are 55 may retire and receive benefits.
• Tax shelter annuity (TSA):
  Eligible Department employees may participate in a tax‑shelter annuity program.
• Deferred compensation:
  The State offers a tax‑deferred retirement investment program with several investment options.
• Temporary disability insurance:
  Qualified employees may receive benefits for a disability caused by a non‑work related injury or illness.
• Social security:
  The State also contributes to an employee's social security account.
• Workers' compensation:
  If an employee is injured on the job, benefits cover medical expenses and partial wage support.
• Union & collective bargaining:
  Employees have the right to join the union for collective bargaining with the State. 12‑month teachers are represented by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
