Overview
We deliver Earth's most precious resource across the island. The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is seeking a skilled and dependable professional for the Water Systems Operator II position to help operate and safeguard Oahu's island‑wide water system. The position is responsible for monitoring and controlling system operations from the control center using telemetering and supervisory control systems to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of safe, high‑quality drinking water.
The role exercises independent judgment in making real‑time operational decisions affecting pumping, reservoir levels, system pressures, and overall distribution performance. Leadership responsibilities include supervising and training staff and coordinating field response efforts during system irregularities and emergency conditions.
- Monitor and control island-wide pumping operations, reservoir levels, and distribution pressures
- Analyze telemeter data to detect abnormal system behavior and implement corrective action
- Manage well production to maintain water quality standards and protect source sustainability
- Coordinate and dispatch field crews for investigations, repairs, emergencies, and service interruptions
- Execute established operational procedures during major main breaks, equipment failures, and critical water shortages
- Supervise and train assigned personnel while ensuring compliance with safety standards, operational procedures, and departmental policies
- Work schedule:
eight hours per day, five days per week, on one of the following shifts: 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. - Rotating shift work
- Holiday and weekend work

Experience RequirementExperience and/or training sufficient to show competence in operating electrically‑driven water pumping plant equipment.
Applicable Skills Needed- Experience supervising staff, assigning work, and providing clear instructions
- Hands‑on operation of electrically driven pumping equipment and related distribution systems controls
- Familiarity with pumping station machinery, auxiliary equipment, and system components
- Practical understanding of electricity and hydraulics as applied to water systems
- Skill in reading meters and gauges, recording system data, and assessing equipment performance
- Strong safety mindset when working with electrical pumping plant equipment
- Ability to build positive relationships and maintain effective team coordination
Current State of Hawaii Distribution System Operator (DSO) Grade IV certification.
