Department of Design and Construction
Soil & Material Testing Technician II
The position involves performing basic techniques and methods of material testing for quality assurance and sampling for soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt materials for use in City-wide projects in accordance with City, State, and Federal procedures.
What You'll Do- Perform laboratory and field testing on construction materials including soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards to verify compliance with project plans and specifications.
- Collect, transport, and document material samples including coring pavements, conducting in-place density tests, and preparing chain-of-custody and test reports to support quality assurance and acceptance decisions.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate testing equipment and laboratory vehicles while ensuring facilities, tools, and materials remain clean, organized, and inspection‑ready.
- Support construction site monitoring and inspections such as stockpile sampling, plant monitoring, site reconnaissance, and post‑emergency damage assessments.
- Follow strict safety protocols in laboratory and field environments, including participation in required safety training and reporting unsafe or defective equipment.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications- Citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States, eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
- Equivalent to graduation from high school; responsible work experience may be substituted for education.
- One year of work experience at or reflective of the next lower level (Soil & Material Testing Technician I).
- Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license; the current vacancy requires a valid Type 3 (automobile) license.
