Engineer II – $99,900.00 to $. Salary determined by skills and qualifications.

Engineer I

Job Function: Under direct supervision of senior professional engineers, perform design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties to support Hawaiian Electric’s capital construction programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, materials and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate work by consulting engineers, evaluate proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and make recommendations.
  • Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
  • Understand company policies, mission, vision, values and follow culture dimensions to ensure company success.

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school, discipline relevant to the Department.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering theories and principles acquired through advanced college‑level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods for electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing) and ability to learn additional tools.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.
  • Working knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices.

Skills Requirements:

  • Good leadership skills and effective written, oral, listening and interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact and courtesy.
  • In‑depth analytical and administrative skills for preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the hiring standards for driving positions.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of generation, transmission, substation and communication and control systems and facilities. Experience must be specific and relevant.
Engineer II

Job Function: Perform design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties to support Hawaiian Electric’s capital construction programs. Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in independent evaluation, substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, and devise new approaches to encountered problems.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance with company standards, applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Develop new or improved techniques and procedures for equipment, material, products or methods.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects, working with City/County, State and Federal agencies on rules, regulations and permits.
  • Conduct engineering studies, prepare reports, and review and comment on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
  • Prepare requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluate proposals and make recommendations. Direct design efforts by consultants and check designs prepared by consultants.
