Job Summary:
Serves in a trainee capacity in a supervised Police Services Officer program; receives training in and performs a variety of non-hazardous field and routine administrative work in support of, or auxiliary to, police functions in preparation for a career in law enforcement; and performs other related duties as required.
Examples of Duties:
- Participates in a supervised Police Services Officer I program involving orientation, classroom instruction, job training, and practical application of law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, and techniques;
- Screens and responds to public inquiries and requests for police assistance by providing general information regarding police services, receiving and investigating non-criminal and non-hazardous complaints and incidents, and referring matters to appropriate personnel, departments, or agencies;
- Receives telephone, walk-in, written, and electronic complaints regarding suspected illegal activities and forwards information to sworn personnel for appropriate action;
- Assists in the receiving, identification, processing, and transportation of non-violent detainees, reports, documents, correspondence, supplies, and equipment in accordance with department policy, without assuming custodial responsibility;
- Assists sworn personnel with emergency management operations, homeless outreach efforts, community outreach projects, community presentations, station tours, and other public service activities;
- Assists with traffic control during major traffic congestion incidents and may administer basic first aid in emergency situations;
- Operates police radio communication equipment under the direction of sworn personnel and assists in preparing, processing, and disseminating police reports and operational logs using general office equipment;
- Assists in conducting law enforcement-related surveys and studies, scheduling police training, inspecting police facilities, and initiating maintenance or repair requests;
- Performs other related duties as required, consistent with the Police Services Officer I's non-sworn status; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training and
Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.

Age:
All candidates for employment as a Police Services Officer I shall be at least Seventeen (17) years old at the time of filing application and 18 years old at the time of appointment.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawai'i Type 3 or equivalent).
