Job Duties

HUC is responsible for providing the highest level of patient care services for the emergency room, medical acute, and long‑term care patients and residents admitted to the hospital. Ensure compliance with standards of patient care dictated by federal and state regulations, licensure, and certification agencies. Order and maintain adequate levels of medical supplies, compressed gases, and pharmaceuticals essential to meet patient care needs, including the operation of central supply and medical supply storeroom.

Ensure all nursing staff personnel receive appropriate training in new patient care procedures that enhance the delivery of nursing care and continually monitor and evaluate nursing staff proficiency. Responsible for scheduling adequate nursing staff to meet patient care needs on all shifts. Assist in development and monitoring of the department’s budget.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

General

Experience:

2 years of work experience performing clerical tasks such as typing, substantive clerical work, or a combination of these experiences demonstrating knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, common office appliances and equipment, ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, communicate effectively orally and in writing, deal tactfully and effectively with others, operate various office equipment, and organize and prioritize work tasks.

Specialized

Experience:

1 year of work experience in a health care setting (e.g., hospital, clinic, physician’s office), involving collaboration with healthcare professionals such as physicians and nurses, receiving, coordinating, expediting, and implementing patient/resident care orders, inputting data into a computer system, preparing and maintaining medical records, or experience in an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required.

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for all of the required General Experience.
  • Successful completion of a substantially full‑time‑equivalent clerical or medical/health‑related curriculum leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate at an accredited community college, business, or technical school that provided knowledge of medical terminology may be substituted for six months of the required Specialized Experience.
  • Current certification as a Health Unit Coordinator by the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) may be substituted for six months of the required Specialized Experience.
  • An Associate’s degree in Health Unit Coordinator, Medical Administrative Assistant, Health Care Administration, Health Services Administrator, or equivalent may be substituted for all of the required General and Specialized Experience.
Knowledge & Abilities Required

Knowledge of: Hospital policies and procedures; applicable State, Federal, and other regulatory requirements; business English, spelling, grammar, and word usage; office practices and procedures; filing methods and systems; operation and maintenance of office appliances and equipment, including copying machines; use of computers and software applications; office practices and procedures; the nature and use of medical terminology and electronic medical records.

Ability to: Plan and carry out a wide range of administrative functions, including complex assignments; maintain an effective work pace under periodic deadlines; manage multiple tasks effectively; understand and apply statutory provisions, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; read and interpret detailed manuals and instructions; use computers and office software; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and deal tactfully with others.
