Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant (MA) supports the clinical team by providing high-quality, culturally sensitive care to patients in an outpatient setting. The MA performs both administrative and clinical duties under the supervision of a licensed provider or nurse, and plays a critical role in ensuring smooth clinic operations and a positive patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:- Prepare patients for examination and treatment, including taking vital signs, documenting medical history, and assisting with procedures.
- Administer medications and immunizations as directed by a provider and within scope of certification.
- Perform basic laboratory tests and specimen collection (e.g., blood draws, swabs, urine).
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Coordinate referrals, prior authorizations, and follow-up appointments as needed.
- Provide patient education as directed by the provider, including after-visit summaries and care instructions.
- Clean and sterilize medical instruments and exam rooms.
- Ensure medical supplies are stocked and equipment is functioning.
- Support front desk staff as needed (scheduling, phone calls, intake).
- Uphold patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and infection control policies.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program preferred
- Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, NCMA, or CCMA) preferred or willingness to obtain within 12 months of hire
- BLS (CPR/FBAO/AED) certification required (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire)
- Prior experience in a community health center, outpatient clinic, or FQHC setting preferred
- On the job training available
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team-based care model
- Familiarity with EHR systems (e.g., Athena, Athena One) is a plus
- Cultural sensitivity and commitment to serving rural and underserved populations
