JOB DUTIES : This is a regional position based in the Recreational Therapy (RT) department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region includes Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), along with the Kaua’i Region Clinics and affiliated entities.
The Recreational Therapy department plays a vital role in enhancing the overall well-being and quality of life for individuals by utilizing structured recreational activities as therapeutic interventions. Its primary function is to assess, plan, and implement personalized activities that address physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs, promoting recovery, rehabilitation, and improved mental health. Through creative and engaging programs such as art, music, physical activities, and social interaction, the department fosters independence, improves coping skills, and enhances socialization while helping individuals achieve their personal goals and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
As a full-performing Activities Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to lead and design engaging activity programs that cater to the social, recreational, physical, educational, and spiritual needs of patients and residents in a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. Your work will empower individuals to maintain their dignity and maximize their mental and physical well-being through creative and meaningful activities.
This dynamic role involves assessing individual needs, developing innovative programs, managing budgets, and overseeing a dedicated team to ensure the highest quality of care. You’ll play a pivotal role in fostering a sense of purpose, self-confidence, and joy among patients and residents, while also contributing to performance improvement initiatives. This position may require shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may involve travel within the region to meet operational requirements and patient care demands.
This position reports directly to the Recreational Therapist V, position number 60586, or their designee.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsApplicants must meet all of the following requirements.
- Three (3) years of work experience in a health facility, primarily involving planning and implementing patient/resident activity programs and treatment procedures.
- One (1) year of work experience as an Activities Coordinator, planning, assessing, and coordinating a comprehensive activity program for patient/resident social, recreational, physical, educational, and other needs; human anatomy; administrative practices and procedures in directing activity programs and treatment procedures in a medically oriented institution; budget preparation; effective communication in English; supervision and training of subordinates.
- Certification
Required:
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. - Driver’s License: A valid State of Hawai'i Type 3 Driver’s License is preferred.
- Graduation from an Occupational Therapy Program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association, registered by the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
- Graduation from a Therapeutic Recreation Program approved by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
- Graduation from an Activities Professionals Program approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), Level 2 – Activity Director Certified (ADC).
