JOB DUTIES:
This regional position is based in the Recreational Therapy department of the Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai'i. The HHSC Kaua'i Region includes Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), along with the Kaua'i Region Clinics and affiliated entities.
The Recreational Therapy department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for individuals through purposeful and therapeutic recreational activities. Its primary functions include assessing the needs and interests of each patient to create personalized treatment plans that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being. They facilitate a variety of engaging activities, such as arts and crafts and community outings, designed to improve functional abilities, foster social connections, and encourage personal growth.
Additionally, their team collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure a holistic approach to treatment, aiming to empower individuals in their recovery journey and enhance their overall health and happiness.
- Provide supportive, therapeutic, and recreational activities to patients/residents under the general direction of a Recreational Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Activities Coordinator, or Registered Professional Nurse V, or higher (Director of Nursing).
- Work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and travel to various facilities within the region as needed to meet operational requirements and patient care demands.
- Report directly to the Recreational Therapist V, position number 60586, or their designee.
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants must submit evidence verifying their relevant education, certifications, and licenses.
Education
: A high school diploma or its equivalent is preferred.
Certification
:
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
Licensure
:
For certain positions, possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Driver’s license (Class
3) or any other valid comparable driver's license may be required.
- One (1) year of work experience in a hospital or other medically oriented institution or program where the primary or basic objective was to observe and report on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implement care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of patients/residents.
- One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in a recreational care program/setting, which involved receiving on-the-job training in performing a variety of basic recreational therapy practices and techniques.
Basic spoken and written English; personal hygiene; bodily care and body mechanics; housekeeping; recreational treatment plans and leisure-time activities; and normal human growth and development.
AbilityRead, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively in English; perform tasks involving heavy physical effort (e.g., lift, position, push, pull, and carry 50 lbs. or more; and walk/stand for extended periods of time); demonstrate poise and tact in dealing with a wide range of patients/residents with different illnesses and injuries; interact patiently and respectfully with staff, patients/residents and visitors; adhere to orders and independently carry out simple recreational activities and therapeutic treatment plans;
communicate and deal effectively with patients/residents and their families; and work effectively with others.
