Job Overview
The P RU GEOSPATIAL DEVELOPMENT Department of the P GEOSPATIAL AND ASSET DATA OPS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has one Management vacancy available for a Professional GIS Developer. This role focuses on designing, developing, and managing GIS information systems to support operations, planning, asset management, outage management, and incident management.
Responsibilities- Designs and develops web, mobile, and/or desktop GIS solutions based on customer workflows and existing processes.
- Manages and maintains performance of existing applications, increasing efficiency and reliability.
- Tests application functionality, troubleshoots issues, and applies fixes.
- Collaborates with IT to keep applications updated with current GIS technology and secure them per IT policies.
- Co‑works with data managers to ensure data integrity and quality assurance.
- Extracts, interpolates, compiles, and analyzes GIS data.
- Assesses and defines customers’ needs, adapting applications to changing business requirements.
- Produces analysis, reporting, tests, and documents GIS applications and systems.
- Communicates project status and issues upward and to customers.
- Serves as the lead contact for system support.
- Educates and communicates complex GIS concepts to customers.
- Trains customers both in office and in field settings.
- Stays current with the latest developments in GIS and GIS‑Utilities.
- Researches, tests, and recommends new technologies and techniques for application development.
- Proposes development initiatives to increase programming efficiencies.
- Provides research, programming, documentation, testing, and training support for information systems.
- Collaborates with analysts, development staff, IT staff, consultants, vendors, and customer personnel to perform detailed analysis and design of information systems.
- Participates on team projects with GIS Specialists, Developers, Mobile Specialists, and Lead Functional Analysts.
- Participates in departmental task forces and cost/benefit reviews as needed.
- Authorizes documentation for company needs such as rate case filings and cost benefit analyses.
- Recommends project staffing and assists with project budgets and operating forecasts.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Knowledge of information and office technology management principles.
- Working knowledge of GIS concepts, data, and technology, including spatial and statistical analysis.
- Understanding of utility business principles and practices.
- Knowledge of Unix, client‑server/multi‑tier, and workstation/PC/Internet technologies and system development.
- Design, code, test, and implement programs in ABAP, Business Object, C/C++/C#, shell scripting, Perl, PHP, Java, SQL, PL/SQL, Microsoft .Net, Python, Java script, XML, HTML on Windows and Unix platforms.
- Understanding of application interfacing, reporting, and database development.
- Knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices for workplace safety.
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and conceptual skills.
- Ability to plan, direct, and perform work independently and for others.
- Strong critical thinking skills for translating business requirements into technical design.
- Excellent collaboration across technical and business teams and clear communication of GIS concepts to non‑technical users.
- Ability to learn new technologies and techniques in GIS.
- Capability to design and develop databases within project scope.
- Proficiency in integrated test planning and user acceptance testing.
- Experience with system configuration standards and guidelines.
- Ability to maintain status of tasks, defects, and issues while supporting multiple requests.
- 3‑5 years of experience designing and deploying GIS solutions, preferably on ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, Experience Builder, ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey
123). - 1‑2 years of experience working with large datasets and enterprise database systems such as SQL, Oracle, or SAP.
- 3‑5 years of programming/support experience in a computing environment, including Unix, client‑server, ESRI‑GIS, and other relevant languages.
- 1‑2 years of analytical experience with simple to complex systems.
