Job Overview

The P PM OPC Project Management Department of the P Investment Planning & Strategy Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a professional Management vacancy available.

Job Function

Plans, organizes, and manages scope, schedule, and costs of major company capital projects. Manages the end-to-end process including complex regulatory approvals, land/Right-of-Way acquisition, public relations management, or cross‑functional/multi‑level (internal) management from conceptualization through budgeting, design, approval, procurement, construction, placement in operation, and project closing. Serves as the primary point of contact for all project matters and is responsible for meeting all project‑related objectives.

Essential

Functions Project Planning and Management
  • Plans, organizes, and manages all project tasks associated with scoping, budgeting, design, approval, procurement, construction, placement in operation, and closing of projects.
  • Provides project leadership and work direction and secures commitment from project team members in meeting project milestones.
  • Ensures team members have all the resources, information, and direction necessary to successfully perform their jobs.
  • Evaluates progress and performance of project team members and implements personnel actions necessary to accomplish project objectives including recognition, redirection, recruitment, and replacement of team members.
Stakeholder & Client Management
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for all project related matters.
  • Works with community groups, neighborhood boards, government agencies, the media, other utilities and private companies, the City Council, the State Legislature, and the PUC to disseminate information, address concerns, obtain permits and approvals, and resolve project‑related problems.
  • Prepares and provides testimonies and presentations at internal strategic meetings, public meetings and regulatory hearings, as necessary.
Project Risk & Change Management
  • Develops the necessary strategies required to meet project goals.
  • Identifies potential problem areas early on.
  • Solves problems to ensure attainment of project goals.
  • Redirects design, purchasing, permits/approvals or construction to prevent or minimize constraints or actions which may delay schedules or add costs to projects.
  • Conducts inspections of construction sites, as necessary.
Governance & Compliance
  • Develops and maintains project schedules.
  • Prepares and presents project progress and cost reports internally and externally, as required.
  • Works with Regulatory Affairs, Management Accounting & Financial Services, Community Relations, Government Relations, Corporate Communications, Legal, Energy Delivery departments, and others in obtaining approvals.
  • Obtains company authorizations for expenditures for engineering, materials, and construction.
  • Reviews and approves procurement for project permitting, design, material and construction.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of project management principles, and engineering and construction practices in the transmission, distribution, substation, and/or generation fields.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from a nationally recognized organization such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) is highly desirable.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Electrical branch or certified as a Planner by a nationally recognized professional society such as the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as MS Project, SAP, UI Planner, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Thorough knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
