On the job training will be provided.

Responsible for maintaining Plant Specific Permit Compliance, through the proper operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) processes, equipment, and devices.

Description of Primary Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and economical operations of equipment in wastewater treatment plants to optimize processes and protect public health.
  • Maintain and upkeep equipment and operating devices.
  • Perform physical and chemical tests and maintain and review operational process control parameters.
  • Troubleshoot plant equipment.
  • Prepare operational reports.
  • Manage pump stations (SPS).
General Development
  • Participate in the training and licensing goal program to obtain at least a Grade 2 Operator License.
  • Possess basic organizational skills, typically able to organize own work.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Consistently follow appropriate safety rules and practices.
  • Manage own duties and responsibilities on a fixed schedule without the need for direction or assistance when prioritization is required.

Professional & Technical Knowledge
  • Possess general work-related skills at a level consistent with completion of a high school diploma or GED, including written and verbal communication, computational and computer skills, and mathematical knowledge.
  • Know the practices and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant and collection systems at a level expected of a State of Hawaii Grade II WWTP Operator.
  • Understand sampling methods and the physical and chemical tests used in treatment plant control, hazards and safety practices around high voltage equipment and moving machinery, process quality control requirements, and remedial measures for process malfunctions and emergencies at a level expected of a State of Hawaii Grade II WWTP Operator.
  • Have a sufficient understanding of collection, treatment, and disposal processes and systems for assigned facilities.
Technical Skills
  • Operate and maintain electrical pumping units and auxiliary equipment, use basic mechanical hand and power tools, read and interpret meters and gauges, record readings, maintain operation records, and perform required laboratory tests and analyze results and technical drawings.
  • Use established company reports and documents in Word and Excel.
  • Use operations software used by the company at the worksite (e.g., Ops 10/Antero/Field Aware/SCADA).
Licenses & Certifications
  • Possess a valid Hawaii Driver’s License.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successfully complete Ken Kerri Wastewater Treatment Course Book 1 (exempt if possesses a valid State of Hawaii Grade IV WWTP License for at least 15 years).
  • Successfully complete Ken Kerri Wastewater Treatment Course Book 2 (exempt if possesses a valid State of Hawaii Grade IV WWTP License for at least 15 years).
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain through on-the-job training a valid State of Hawaii Grade II WWTP Operator License.
Communications Skills
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy in the resolution of mild conflicts or disagreements.
  • Effectively convey technical information to non‑technical audiences.
  • Effectively interpret and communicate operational information to co‑workers, clients, and others as required.
Physical Demands
  • Meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of these duties.
  • Be exposed to hazardous, unsanitary, and unpleasant conditions.
  • Work shift, weekend, and holiday schedules.
  • Perform heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. and other manual work under adverse conditions.
Pay Range

$28.32 – $33.95 per hour. An annual incentive bonus with an earning potential of 10% of base pay.
