Job Overview

Regular, Full‑Time, RCUH Non‑Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, working in support of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Forest Management Section, located in Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program or operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct alien and native plant monitoring and invasive plant control.
  • Control alien plants using mechanical and chemical/biological techniques.
  • Assist with fuels mitigation and vegetation management, including building, inspecting, and maintaining fences.
  • Monitor and control alien plants, feral pigs, axis deer, feral goats, and predators.
  • Conduct ungulate control and monitoring activities in Maui Nui DOFAW‑managed lands and watershed partnership lands.
  • Deploy game cameras and bait stations to facilitate ungulate capture.
  • Input data into GPS equipment and computer database.
  • Establish and monitor transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution.
  • Perform assigned duties related to habitat protection, including site preparation and seed collection.
  • Assist with flora and fauna surveys, including invertebrates.
  • Require frequent camping for four to five days a week, up to two weeks per month.
  • Drive project vehicles to work sites.
  • Travel and work in and around helicopters.
  • Work extended, irregular hours.
Primary Qualifications Education

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience

One to three (1–3) years of field experience surveying plant and animal populations and work in remote settings.

Knowledge

Basic knowledge of flora and fauna, and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology.

Abilities & Skills
  • Navigate using a compass, map, and hand‑held GPS units.
  • Apply herbicides.
  • Work independently.
  • Inspect and repair fences.
  • Use a computer to record technical field data, analyze data using database and spreadsheet programs, and prepare draft reports.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and required insurance for personal vehicle use; operate a 4‑wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
  • Maintain First Aid/CPR certification and complete chainsaw training within 12 months of hire.
  • Complete online Hazard Communication training after hire and basic helicopter safety course (A100) within 6 months.
Physical & Medical Demands

Ability to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation or over lava substrate under difficult conditions; hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain for up to five consecutive days, up to three weeks per month; backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty pounds unassisted.

Secondary Qualifications
  • College coursework in biology, ecology, wildlife management, botany, or related field.
  • Experience in hunting feral animals.
  • Experience using radio telemetry and GIS.
  • Experience constructing, repairing, or inspecting enclosure fencing.
  • Knowledge of endangered fauna and flora species in Hawai‘i.
