Position Title: NPS Historic Preservation Training Center – Traditional Trades Advancement Program – Haleakala National Park – Ameri Corps

Terms of Service
  • Start Date: 07/27/2026
Purpose

Stewards Individual Placements is an Ameri Corps affiliated program that provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas.

Description

Stewards, in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center, are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program. Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This internship serving out of Haleakala National Park will be preserving and maintaining trails located within designated wilderness by the use of hand tools. Since Haleakala is an "on trail" park, meaning visitors are only allowed to travel into the backcountry on established trails, these trails keep park visitors from trampling the environment of the many native species the park is home to.

The use of hand tools and a team of pack mules to complete work maintains the quiet and natural character of the wilderness. Another priority is the maintenance and building of non-potable water supply structures for park visitors, animals, and staff working within the wilderness. This allows the necessary work to happen for Vegetation and Wildlife crews while they perform their stewardship activities and missions.

Maintaining and restoring Haleakala's backcountry cabins is also a large portion of the work required. Maintaining these historic structures allows the public comfortable and safe access to Haleakala's beauty year-round to inspire broad appreciation and respect for the environmental efforts of the conservationists that have helped to restore this sacred environment as closely as possible to what it would have looked like naturally before western contact with the Hawaiian Islands.
