Regular, Full‑Time, RCUH Non‑Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working in support of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) located in Kamuela, Hawai‘i. Work sites are in Natural Area and Forest Reserves throughout Hawai‘i district, and occasionally on other Hawaiian Islands. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Monthly Salary: $4,220/Mon.

Closing Date: July 27, 2026.

• Supervises and assigns work to PCSU /ER personnel in projects such as fence building, alien plant control, native vegetation restoration, vertebrate pest management, and monitoring.
• Leads field technicians, temporary staff, interns, and volunteers; provides instruction, coaching, and performance evaluation.
• Manages schedules, produces work plans, and ensures compliance with RCUH/PCSU SOPs and crew safety protocols.
• Operates 4‑wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, chainsaws, GPS, radios, and other field equipment; maintains tools and vehicles.
• Collects and enters field data, prepares simple maps, and assists with record keeping.
• Initiates appropriate disciplinary measures for non‑compliance when necessary.
• Collaborates with Hawai‘i Natural Resources Management Specialist on goal setting and project objectives.
• Engages in feral animal removal projects, including operating and maintaining air guns under safety procedures.
• Travels, works in remote outdoor environments, and may work extended or irregular hours.

• Education: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or university. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus two (2) years of natural resource management experience may substitute.)
• Experience: Two to four (2‑4) years of field experience in natural resource conservation, agriculture, forestry, or similar work in Hawai‘i; at least one (1) year of supervising or lead experience.
• Knowledge: Management principles (supervision, EEO, workplace safety, disciplinary actions, policies), native Hawaiian flora and fauna, threats from alien species, agricultural chemicals, fencing techniques, and basic safety practices.

  • Identify plant species; safely operate power tools and hand tools.
  • Operate desktop computers and basic office equipment.
  • Possess valid driver’s license and insurance; drive manual 4‑wheel drive vehicles.
  • Complete required aviation, first aid, chainsaw, rappelling, hazardous communication, firearms, and other certifications as specified.
  • Pass 12‑month probation and achieve satisfactory performance evaluation prior to air‑gun usage authorization.
• Physical/Medical Demands: Ability to hike, camp, and work in remote areas for up to five days; no acrophobia; work in poor weather and high elevation; lift 40 lbs unassisted and >100 lbs with assistance.

• College coursework in biology, natural sciences, or related fields.
• Technical or research experience with a natural resource management agency (vegetation or wildlife work).
• Skilled trades such as carpentry, engine mechanics, or construction/maintenance.
• Familiarity with computers and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
• Experience with herbicides or other pest‑control chemicals.
• Extended wilderness living/working experience.
• Training or experience with helicopter operations.
