Invasive Species Field Associate I – # 226386.
Full‑time, Regular, Non‑Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) working for an island‑based Invasive Species Committee, located in Kapaa, Kauai. Continuation of employment depends on program/operational needs, satisfactory performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
Closing date: July 24, 2026.
Monthly Salary: $3,400 per month.
Duties- Work in the field to eradicate or control invasive alien plant and animal species, plant pathogens, and disease vectors as identified by the project manager and committee.
- Conduct reconnaissance, surveys, and mechanical/chemical removal for invasive alien species in natural, urban, and suburban areas, including off‑trail areas.
- Implement protocols to prevent seed dispersal, follow decontamination protocols, and operate consistently with safety standards.
- Drive project vehicles on and off road, work around helicopters, and handle pesticides.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of treatment and control work.
- Operate a GPS, download GPS units, and input and update data to produce maps and other materials to guide daily field activities.
- Assist with maintenance of equipment, field gear, vehicles, and project base yard, including proper storage of herbicides.
- Assist with public relations activities, events, and foster favorable relationships with property owners and other members of the public.
- Contribute to a positive work environment and serve as a valued member of the field team.
- Work flexible schedule including early morning, late night hours, and occasional weekends.
- Progression possible to Invasive Species Field Associate II upon demonstrated ability to meet performance factors.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota, natural history, and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.
- Knowledge of field activities related to natural resources management.
- Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and common introduced weed species.
- Ability to follow a detailed work plan and assist with logistics.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work.
- Experience working with small mechanized equipment (chainsaws, etc.).
- Basic computer skills.
- Valid driver’s license with valid personal driver’s insurance if personal vehicle usage is required.
- Must be able to drive a 4‑wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
- Must possess American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or obtain within six months of hire) and maintain it.
- Must complete online Hazard Communication training within 30 days of hire.
- Must complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve months of hire if selected for helicopter transport.
- Must obtain and maintain State of Hawai‘i Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides if required to apply pesticides on military lands.
- Submit chainsaw training certification if selected for chainsaw use.
- Submit rappelling training certification if selected for rappelling duties.
- Work long hours in the field.
- Backpack, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Hike and camp in remote areas on steep, uneven, rugged terrain; camp overnight up to five consecutive days.
- Work outdoors in adverse conditions (extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall, mosquitoes).
- Flexible schedule with early morning, late night hours, and occasional weekends.
- Must not be acrophobic.
- Associate’s Degree in a Natural Resource or Agriculture related field.
- Experience working in and around helicopters and using pesticides.
- Field experience in active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of invasive alien species.
- Experience using handheld GPS units and ArcGIS software.
- Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field.
- Ability to identify a wide variety of native and alien plants/animals.
