Parks Maintenance Division

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Parks Maintenance Division in Kailua-Kona. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples Of Duties

Supervises and participates in the maintenance of parks, buildings and adjacent grounds, ball fields, playgrounds, gymnasiums, beaches and recreational facilities, cemeteries, and offices.

Supervises and participates in the raking, trimming, fertilizing, and watering of lawns, plants, shrubbery, etc. in a scenic or recreational area set aside for public use.

Supervises and participates in the preparation of burial plots, setting and aligning headstones, filling sunken grave sites, assisting mortuary personnel, removing dead flowers, and keeping grave site clean and manicured.

Supervises and participates in the preparation of paperwork to include cemetery records, daily worksheets, work orders, etc. Notifies the public on departmental and cemetery rules and regulations. Assists the public in locating grave plots.

Propagates plants and shrubs from seeds, cuttings, and roots.

Sprays insecticides and herbicides in order to eradicate harmful insects and weeds.

Makes minor repairs to park buildings and facilities, stonewalls, fireplaces, picnic tables, benches, stone lanterns, bridges, etc.

Plans and executes small-scale landscaping operations and modifications of existing plans.

Operates a vehicle to transport equipment, materials, and employees; to travel from one park to another; and to deliver trash to staging area or transfer station; and maintains and services vehicle.

Operates, light motorized or power equipment and tools as required.

Notifies the public of park rules and ordinances applicable to the protection of public property and public safety. Reports incidents of non-compliance.

Contacts superiors and/or local authorities and prepares reports on observed violations; may testify in court.

May supervise others as assigned during construction activities.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience : A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • two (2) years of experience in the care and maintenance of parks or grounds with some work experience in minor repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.

License Requirement :

  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver license (Class
    3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)
