Position: BIOSECURITY INSPECTOR I - SHIFTWORK - HILO, HAWAII ISLAND (OHHI)

Position Overview

This role is an entry trainee level in the Biosecurity Inspector series, designed to provide a career‑oriented introduction to the State’s plant and non‑domestic animal quarantine and pest control programs.

Responsibilities

Assist in the application of principles, procedures, work processes, techniques, and scientific reference material to actual situations, gaining practical understanding of the agency’s programs, policies, and objectives. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Schedule and Compensation

Salary: $4,243 per month (SR‑16, Step

D). Work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications
  • Legal Authorization to work in the United States: U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident alien, or eligible under federal law.
  • Education:

    Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas:
    • 1. Agricultural, Landscape, or Integrated Pest Management;
      Entomology;
      Horticulture;
      Nematology;
      Plant and Environmental Protection Science;
      Plant Pathology;
      Tropical Agriculture and the Environment;
      Tropical Plant and Soil Science;
    • 2. Biological or Agricultural Science with coursework in:
      • One course in entomology, nematology, pest management, plant and environmental protection science, plant pathology, tropical agriculture and the environment, virology, or related courses.
      • One course in agroecology, agronomy, botany, horticulture, plant physiology, tropical plant and soil science, weed science, or related courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and comprehensive reports, read and interpret complex written material, perform basic arithmetic computations, and solve complex problems logically and systematically.
  • Driver’s license: possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Physical requirement: able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with or without reasonable accommodation.
