MOSQUITO RESEARCH/CONTROL FIELD ASSOCIATE – # 226445

CLOSING DATE:

MONTHLY SALARY: $3,654/Mon.

Regular, Full‑Time, Limited‑Term (not to exceed two (2) years from date of hire). Position located with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP), on the Island of Maui, Hawai‘i.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct fieldwork de‑ploying landscape‑level mosquito control (setting, checking, and monitoring traps, collecting data).
  • Perform additional management activities to benefit the recovery of native Hawaiian forest birds.
  • Operate project vehicles, both on‑ and off‑road, and work in and around helicopters.
  • Hike, camp, and carry heavy gear in forest conditions; assist in maintenance of field equipment and field stations.
  • Assist in base yard and office maintenance, vehicle repair, and logistical preparations for field operations.
  • Enter field data into computer databases for analysis.
  • Expect regular remote camp stays of 4–10 days in remote areas, with long hikes and significant physical exertion.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four‑year college or university.
  • Associate's Degree plus 1–3 years of related experience may substitute.
EXPERIENCE
  • Up to 1 year of paid or volunteer experience in biological or agricultural fieldwork (must be documented and verifiable).
KNOWLEDGE
  • Natural history and threats from alien plant and animal invasions.
  • Field activities related to natural resources management.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
  • Detailed field note keeping, data collection, spreadsheet and database entry.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Valid driver’s license and personal driver’s insurance (if personal vehicle used).
  • Completion of helicopter safety course (A100) within 6 months of hire and ongoing certification.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR within 3 months of hire and ongoing maintenance.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with mist netting, banding, and blood sampling of songbirds.
  • Familiarity with native Hawaiian flora and fauna.
  • Interagency aviation training or helicopter crew member/manager certifications.
  • Experience with small machine maintenance and electronics repair.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork at high elevation forests under cold, wet, and rugged conditions.
  • Hiking 10–15 miles carrying up to 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Live and work in remote field camps with other personnel for 4–10 consecutive days.
  • Conduct strenuous field work under extreme conditions and operate safely around helicopters.
