RCUH is a state agency, established by the Legislature in 1965, and is attached to the University of Hawaiʻi for administrative purposes. RCUH’s mission is to support and enhance research, development and training in Hawai‘i, with a focus on the University of Hawaiʻi.

Job Overview

Full‑time, limited‑term (not to exceed two years) position in Maui. Monthly salary: $3,654. Closing date:

DUTIES
  • Conduct fieldwork on the deployment of landscape‑level mosquito control, including setting, checking, and monitoring traps and collecting data.
  • Perform other management activities on Maui to benefit the recovery of native Hawaiian forest birds.
  • Follow safety standards and established protocols.
  • Drive project vehicles on and off road, and work in and around helicopters.
  • Hike, camp, and carry heavy gear in forest conditions.
  • Assist with maintenance of field equipment, trails, field stations, and baseyard/office; repair essential tools used in the field.
  • Assist with preparations and logistics for field operations.
  • Enter field data into computer databases for analysis.
  • Travel to remote areas requiring long hikes; camp 4–10 days at a time on a regular basis.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four‑year college or university (Associate’s Degree and one to three years of experience may substitute).
  • Experience: Up to one year of paid or volunteer experience in biological or agricultural fieldwork (documented and verifiable).
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions, and field activities related to natural resources management.

    Skills:

    Ability to take detailed field notes and follow a prescribed data collection system; perform data entry into spreadsheets and databases; basic computer skills; work in remote and challenging field conditions; work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain it throughout employment; must have valid personal driver’s insurance per Hawai‘i’s No‑Fault Driver’s Insurance.
  • Post Offer/Employment Conditions:
    Able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six months and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or obtain within three months of hire) and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Physical/Medical Demands:
    Ability to conduct fieldwork in high elevation forest under cold, wet, and extremely rugged conditions; hike 10–15 miles; carry up to 40 lbs unassisted; live/work in remote field camps for up to 10 days; work around and fly in approved helicopters.
  • Policy/Regulatory Requirement:
    Subject to RCUH policies, UH policies, and applicable State/Federal laws; violations may lead to disciplinary action.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience mist netting, banding, and taking blood samples from songbirds.
  • Familiarity with native Hawaiian flora and fauna.
  • Interagency Aviation Training, Helicopter crew member or Helicopter manager certifications.
  • Experience with small machine maintenance and electronics repair.
