Job Overview

Amentum is seeking an Able Seaman, Advanced for a position on Kauai, HI. The Able Seaman (AB) (Advanced) is a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) crew position aboard assigned US NAVY Range Support Craft for the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands, HI. The AB is a junior deck position holding a current US Coast Guard MMC for National Able Seaman – SPECIAL (or higher) and works under the direction of a USCG licensed vessel Master and the Koa Lani Marine Systems Supervisor.

The AB works at sea in various weather conditions primarily off the west coast of the Island of Kauai within the PMRF Barking Sands submarine training range. When in port, the AB performs daily operational tasks and general maintenance for assigned vessels and support equipment under the direction of the boat captains or other designated senior crew persons. Additional tasks performed by the AB may be required on shore facilities, assigned small boats, shop equipment and special projects.

• Performs as a junior crew person in a crew of six team members on a 95‑foot NAVY Range Training Support Craft.
• Works in a team environment under supervision of the Master, Mate, or other senior personnel receiving technical guidance as required.
• Stands bridge, helm, lookout, and vessel security watches while the vessel is underway.
• Performs general preventative and corrective maintenance, corrosion control, housekeeping tasks, scraping, painting, scrubbing, and swabbing decks, and maintains interior and exterior spaces.
• Performs specialized marine and shore‑based tasks in support of operations and fleet training, departmental errands, and HAZMAT control functions.
• Assists with launch and recovery of oceanographic equipment, small boats, targets, torpedoes, and various mission‑essential equipment or devices; may be required to enter the water to accomplish these tasks.
• Splices mooring lines, tow lines, and other working lines using double‑braided line and three‑strand line; splices cables and performs periodic inspections and maintenance on rigging gear.
• Loads cargo as part of a weight‑handling team under the supervision of senior persons.
• Performs maintenance to vessels and equipment in accordance with required Preventative Maintenance Programs.
• Maintains cleanliness of vessel and accompanying equipment and prepares meals while underway on occasion.
• Assists with replenishment of fuel and water tanks when necessary.
• Operates forklift, machine‑shop equipment, hand tools, drill press, grinders, band saw, sand blaster, and related equipment.
• Participates as certified rigger and signalman during crane lifts or weight‑handling events.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Periodically accesses computer network systems to complete logs, conduct online training, and research products or equipment.

• Two years of experience as a crew person on small boats.
• Experience performing target, torpedo, and oceanographic equipment recovery; comfortable working in and entering the water to accomplish recoveries.
• Experience operating radio and oceanographic equipment to transmit data.
• Experience with snorkel equipment and comfortable working in water.
• Experience performing daily operational tasks and general maintenance on vessels and related support equipment.
• Minimum 360 days of experience working aboard vessels on the ocean or U.S. waters.
• Comfortable entering the water in the open ocean with snorkel gear; SCUBA certified is highly desired.
• Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
• Basic knowledge of common vessel equipment, nautical terms, snorkel equipment, lines, ropes, related equipment, and ground tackle.
• Ability to fabricate and install mooring lines.

• Certifications:
  
  Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC); US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) with Able Seaman – SPECIAL (or higher); valid state driver’s license; CPR/AED/1st Aid obtained through USCG certification;
  Open Water SCUBA Diver certification.
