Assistant Plumbing Inspector, SR-16

Inspects and tests plumbing, gas, and sewer line installations and equipment in buildings and structures of limited size and scope for compliance with plans and specifications, plumbing code and other pertinent ordinances, and accepted safety and health standards, and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Building Division in Kailua-Kona.

This Assistant Plumbing Inspector, SR-16, position is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Plumbing Inspector, SR-19, $4,933/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

• Receives and reviews applications for plumbing and gas permits.
• Checks and verifies information recorded on applications with related building permits on file.
• Reviews less complex plumbing and gas installation plans to determine their compatibility with code requirements.
• Inspects plumbing and gas installations in existing or new residential and small commercial and industrial buildings.
• Check installations and equipment including sanitary plumbing systems, domestic water systems, lawn sprinkler systems, water heaters, gas piping, cesspools, and septic tanks.
• Inspects the installations of sewer lines, wet and dry standpipes, and fire sprinkler systems.
• Checks for detective materials and for size and type of pipes and fittings.
• Checks for grade and alignment.
• Checks installations of gas and hot water systems for quality, capacity of tanks, pressure and leakage.
• Issues notices of violations of codes and ordinances.
• Follows up on violation notices to see that corrections are made.
• Inspects plumbing and gas installations and equipment in existing buildings.
• Provides information to plumbing contractors, owners, and others on plumbing code and regulations.
• Keeps work records and prepares reports on inspections.
• Inputs and checks permit status updates in the permitting software system and/or other applications.
• May assist in inspecting plumbing and gas installations and equipment in large or multi-storied buildings.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Training and

Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

• graduation from high school, and
• three (3) years of experience in inspecting or supervising plumbing installation work.

License/Certificate Requirements:

• possession of a current State of Hawai'i Master Plumber or Journey level Plumber license at the time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your license to your application), and
• possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class
  3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire).

Examination:
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.
