These positions serve as a probation officer and require a current valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.

Job Summary

As a Social Worker with the Judiciary, you will contribute to public welfare and safety by providing client‑centered services in court programs. Duties are program‑specific and may involve working with a diverse client population, including juvenile and adult law violators, defendants on conditional release, and cases involving child custody, protection orders, and family court referrals. The role emphasizes evidence‑based practices to promote behavioral change and improve outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise juvenile and adult law violators and defendants conditionally released from the Hawaii State Hospital.
  • Conduct child custody and visitation evaluations.
  • Assist protection order petitioners and child welfare services cases referred to Family Court.
  • Engage families and the community in juvenile cases.
  • Provide services for the full range of cases within the program’s scope at a field location.
  • Possibly supervise a small group of less experienced social workers.
  • Provide technical consultation on case direction for a specific program area.
Education Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four (4)‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree that includes a minimum of twelve (12) semester credit hours in courses such as social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or related social sciences.

Work experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis, provided it is of comparable scope, level, and quality, and demonstrates the ability to write clear reports, interpret complex material, and solve problems logically.

Specialized Experience

Two and one‑half (2½) years of progressively responsible professional social work experience, including assessments, treatment planning, interdisciplinary teamwork, and evaluating client progress and adjusting plans.

Substitution Allowed
  • A bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker II or six (6) months of experience.
  • A master’s degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker III or one and one‑half (1½) years of experience.
  • A Ph.D. degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration qualifies for Social Worker IV or two and one‑half (2½) years of experience.
Non‑Qualifying Experience
  • Supportive services to professional social workers, vocational rehabilitation specialists, or housing managers.
  • Determining eligibility for public welfare benefits.
  • Vocational, educational, psychological, or pastoral counseling.
  • Occupational or physical therapeutic services.
  • Peace Corps or VISTA work that did not require professional social work knowledge or supervision.
  • Relocating clients displaced by urban renewal or similar reasons.
  • Trainee‑level social work experience unless performed under competent supervision.
Selective Certification Requirement – Driver’s License

Applicants must possess a current and valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.

PREA Requirement

Applicants must not have the following disqualifying factors: sexual abuse in any correctional or community confinement setting, convictions or civil/administrative adjudications related to sexual activity, substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or harassment, or resignation during a pending investigation.
