Job Overview

Recruitment Number 25-007TY, Social Worker II (PO/DL), SR-18, Kauai. These positions serve as probation officers and require a current valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle. This posting is for a second‑level social worker. Depending on your education and experience, you may qualify for other levels. Please review the minimum qualification requirements carefully.

Responsibilities
  • Supervision of juvenile law violators, adult law violators, and defendants conditionally released from the Hawaii State Hospital or juvenile status offenders.
  • Conducting child custody/visitation evaluations.
  • Assisting protection order petitioners.
  • Assisting in child welfare services cases referred to the Family Court.
  • Managing juveniles temporarily detained.
  • Engaging families and community in juvenile cases.
  • Investigating and determining kinds of services needed by individual clients or families.
  • Carrying out approved treatment plans.
  • Preparing case records and reports.
  • Performing other duties as required.
Education & Experience

Education Requirement:
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor's degree that includes at least twelve (12) semester credit hours in social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or related social sciences.
Substitution:
Excess work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis if it was of comparable scope, level, and quality.

Specialized Experience
  • One‑half (½) year of progressively responsible professional social work experience involving utilization of social work skills and professional judgment in assisting individuals and families.
  • Conducting assessments, developing and implementing treatment plans, working cooperatively with interdisciplinary teams, and evaluating client progress.
Substitution Allowed
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration: qualifies for Social Worker II or six (6) months of experience.
  • Master's degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration: qualifies for Social Worker III or one and one‑half (1‑½) years of experience.
  • Ph.D. degree in Social Work or Criminal Justice Administration: qualifies for Social Worker IV or two and one‑half (2‑½) years of experience.
Non‑Qualifying Experience
  • Providing supportive services to professionals such as vocational rehabilitation specialists, housing managers, or other public welfare workers.
  • Determining eligibility for public welfare benefits such as medical assistance or food stamps.
  • Providing vocational, educational, psychological, or pastoral counseling.
  • Providing occupational or physical therapeutic services.
  • Peace Corps or VISTA work that did not require professional social work knowledge or competent supervision.
  • Relocating clients displaced due to urban renewal or similar reasons.
  • Trainee‑level social work experience not performed under professional supervision.
Driver's License Requirement

Applicants must possess a current and valid driver's license.

PREA Requirement
  • Must not have engaged in sexual abuse in any correctional or detention facility.
  • Must not have been convicted of sexual activity with undue force or coercion.
  • Must not have been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in such activity.
  • Must not have been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or harassment.
