Position: Spcialty Instructor (Pilates Reformer) - El Camino

POSITION SUMMARY

The Specialty Group Exercise Instructor leads unique or advanced fitness classes such as or other specialized formats. They are responsible for creating safe, effective, and engaging sessions that cater to a range of skill levels. The instructor brings expertise in their specialty area, offers modifications when needed, and fosters a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports participants' wellness goals.

SALARY RANGE

$29.00 - $40.00/Hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Design and deliver structured, goal-oriented group exercise classes aligned with program objectives.
  • Demonstrate proper form and technique, providing clear verbal and visual instruction.
  • Offer appropriate modifications and progressions to accommodate varying fitness levels and abilities.
  • Maintain strong class flow, time management, and energy to ensure a positive participant experience.
  • Conduct equipment and space checks prior to each class to ensure a safe environment.
  • Actively monitor participants for proper form and signs of fatigue or distress.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to injuries or emergencies in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Maintain current CPR/AED and all required certifications.
  • Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Health & Wellness department and overall member experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously for extended periods during classes or shifts.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for demonstrating exercises and handling equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move fitness equipment weighing up to [insert weight, e.g., 25 lbs].
  • Capability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as needed to assist participants or maintain the workout space.
  • Good physical stamina and cardiovascular fitness to lead active sessions.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Recognized as a certified Group Exercise Specialist and/or Non-Traditional Specialist, with a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a recognized specialty group exercise discipline.
  • Current Adult CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Complete required abuse prevention training.
  • Completion of YMCA-required trainings within six months of hire, including:
    • Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y.
    • Foundations of Listen First.
    • Principles of Member Health & Wellness.
    • Group Exercise at the Y.
    • Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y (or an equivalent certification from another recognized organization).
  • Current certification in the specialty area being taught.
  • Minimum of one YMCA specialty certification or an accredited equivalent.
  • Eligibility for Group Exercise Specialist Instructor includes the following formats: Ballet, Tai Chi, Gymnastics, Ballroom Dance, Martial Arts, Pilates reformer.
