What To Expect
Tesla is seeking an innovative Structural Design Engineer with strong expertise in designing structural and seismic building systems to join our dynamic North America Infrastructure team in Los Angeles. This role emphasizes forward‑thinking structural design, cross‑functional collaboration, and hands‑on implementation. You will be responsible for delivering scalable, code‑compliant, and constructable solutions that support Tesla’s fast‑paced R&D for Autopilot, Energy, Vehicle, Solar, AI, Optimus, and Cell Manufacturing where no week looks the same.
You will help design and deploy mechanical systems that directly enable innovation while advancing Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
- Coordinate structural design on multi‑discipline project teams including architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and MEP professionals
- Conduct structural analysis and design of concrete, steel, wood, masonry and other structural systems for lateral and gravity forces, and create justifying structural calculations
- Make technical assumptions, think independently to complete assigned work, and draw conclusions based on engineering judgement
- Present 30%, 60% and 90% design reviews to stakeholders and multi‑discipline teams
- Complete field work independently or with the design team
- Provide planning estimates with limited scoping information
- Manage structural projects from estimating through construction
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or equivalent experience, and minimum 5‑7 years of experience with structural design and engineering
- Knowledge of software such as ETABS, SAFE, SAP
2000, RISA 3D, RAM Structural System, BIM/CAD modeling tools (Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD) - Advanced level understanding of California and International Building Codes and structural design standards (IBC, ACI, AISC ASCE)
- Advanced proficiency in structural design with various materials such as steel, concrete, Unistrut, cold‑form steel, steel welding, and reinforcement details of concrete
- Proficiency in lateral (seismic/wind) and foundation design and related code requirements and design considerations for constructability and construction sequence, including developing structural plans, details, and supporting calculations for permit and construction packages and responding to plan check
- Experience in structural design of buildings for high‑tech infrastructure, industrial, or operational facilities (automotive manufacturing, semiconductor, solar, battery, etc.)
- Willingness to travel to support infrastructure development in California and throughout North America (travel up to 20%)
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred – preference for CA, CO, NV, TX or open to reciprocity

Expected Compensation
$91,200 – $228,000 annual salary plus cash and stock awards and benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
