Senior Associate Scientist, R&D Chemistry
We are currently seeking a synthetic organic chemist for the R&D (Research & Development) Chemistry group. In this position, they will play an important role in supporting Regeneron small molecule antibody-conjugate drug discovery capabilities, providing an important link with the company's existing expertise in biologics and novel genetic medicines. The candidate will enable in-house laboratory-based synthetic chemistry activities towards the discovery and generation of novel small-molecule payloads and linkers for antibody-drug conjugate therapeutics across research areas of oncology, metabolic disease/obesity, infectious diseases, immunology and inflammation, neuroscience, and ophthalmology.
Cultural fit with the Regeneron chemistry and cross-functional teams is a priority. The R&D Chemistry team is composed of synthetic organic, medicinal chemistry and bioconjugation scientists that work in a highly collaborative environment with other technology, biology and therapeutic area groups. Successful candidates will have small-molecule synthetic organic background and experience with the retrosynthetic analysis, synthetic route design, and hands-on execution of multistep synthetic protocols including compound isolation and characterization.
A firm understanding of modern organic synthesis strategies and techniques and the ability to work independently while deploying them in a fit-for-purpose efficient approach to biologically active targets of interest will be the key. Ability to interpret spectroscopic data in the assignment/ confirmation of small molecule structures is required. Knowledge of the latest synthetic methods utilized in the antibody-conjugate linker generation is a plus.
A day in the life of a Senior Associate Scientist – R&D Chemistry may look like:
- Perform the day-to-day laboratory activities as part of the R&D Chemistry group, providing experimental execution of small-molecule syntheses and the associated compound isolation and characterization.
- Troubleshoot, analyze data, interpret experimental results and propose synthetic approaches to new targets.
- Discuss biological data and new targets within the existing projects to address structure-activity relationship directions.
- Identify new strategies and technologies best suited for synthetic execution of the targets of interest.
- Work within the priorities set by the cross-functional teams and your supervisor. Ensure successful progression of the group's technology and pipeline projects.
- Participate in departmental, cross-functional meetings to contribute expertise and to represent the goals of the R&D Chemistry group.
- Interact broadly and collaboratively with other Regeneron groups.
This might be the right role for you if:
- You are passionate and enthusiastic about the promise of small molecule-based, antibody-targeted therapeutics and appreciate the challenges of synthetic chemistry and drug design.
- You enjoy developing solutions for synthesis and advancing structure-activity relationships within medicinal chemistry drug discovery programs.
- You are comfortable working as part of a cross-functional team.
- You want to be a part of the organizational culture that supports growth and development of its people and capabilities to drive forward the Regeneron pipeline.
To be considered for this role, you must:
Have a M.Sc. in synthetic organic chemistry (or related), and familiarity with drug discovery processes and modern methods of synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry.
Bonus experience would include general understanding of the process of biological target validation, ADME/PK, PD/efficacy and of the ways that medicinal chemistry contributes to the progress in these areas.
A minimum of 5-7 years of industry drug discovery experience with small molecules is required. Familiarity with peptidomimetics or antibody-targeted therapeutics is a plus.
