Geotechnical Engineer

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to join a growing geotechnical and materials testing firm and contribute to a wide variety of challenging projects throughout the Inland Northwest. You will support a diverse blend of public and private projects that vary in scope and technical complexity, including foundation design for buildings and infrastructure, landslide stabilization, and transportation and roadway design. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality geotechnical solutions while collaborating closely with clients, colleagues, and project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

+ Lead geotechnical investigations and develop foundation designs for public and private projects, including buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil works.

+ Analyze subsurface and ground conditions, including soil and rock properties, groundwater conditions, slope stability, and seismic hazards.

+ Plan, coordinate, and interpret field exploration programs, including drilling, soil and rock sampling, and in-situ testing.

+ Oversee and review construction materials testing, including concrete testing, soil testing, and related laboratory and field procedures.

+ Perform geotechnical analysis and design using appropriate software and engineering methods to support safe and efficient project solutions.

+ Prepare clear, concise proposals, geotechnical reports, and technical recommendations for clients and project teams.

+ Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and field staff.

+ Manage projects from initiation through completion, including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control.

+ Ensure project deliverables meet technical standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.

+ Collaborate with clients, design teams, and contractors to address geotechnical issues during design and construction.

+ Attend project meetings and present findings, recommendations, and design solutions to clients and stakeholders.

+ Support business development by maintaining client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and contributing to proposals.

+ Participate in professional organizations and industry events to stay current with geotechnical practices and enhance professional visibility.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, or a closely related discipline.

+ Current Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Washington or Idaho, or the ability to obtain licensure within 30 days of employment.

+ 5-10 years of geotechnical engineering experience.

+ Prefer at least 3 years of experience in geotechnical engineering as a licensed Professional Engineer.

+ Demonstrated experience in geotechnical investigations and geotechnical analysis for foundations, slopes, and related structures.

+

Experience with construction materials testing, including concrete testing, soil testing, and related inspection activities.

+ Project management experience, including scheduling, budgeting, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams.

+ Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare professional reports and present technical information clearly.

+ Experience working directly with clients and contributing to business development activities.

+ Proficiency in geotechnical engineering principles, including slope stability, foundation design, and earthwork evaluation.

+ Ability to supervise and mentor junior engineers and field staff in both office and field settings.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+

Experience with AutoCAD for preparing drawings and coordinating with design teams.

+ Familiarity with geotechnical software such as LPILE and Slide is a plus.

+

Experience with specialized geotechnical tools or platforms referenced by the firm is advantageous.

+ Knowledge of American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards and practices related to concrete testing and inspection.

+ Experience in construction materials testing and inspection for concrete, soils, and related materials.

+

Experience with drilling operations and coordination of subsurface exploration programs.

+ Involvement in professional organizations related to geotechnical or civil engineering.

+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

The role is based within the Inland Northwest and offers flexibility to work from several office locations, including Tri-Cities, Spokane, Lewiston, Meridian, Missoula, or Hayden. You will work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment where engineers, field staff, and technical specialists partner across multiple offices as engineering functions become more centralized.
