Job Description

Position Title: Fall Play Costume Designer

Production Type: Non-Musical Play

Reports To: Director

Availability: As needed from the beginning of rehearsal (early September) through performance (mid-November).

Compensation: $1,048

Position Summary

The Costume Designer is responsible for creating and coordinating costumes that support the production's artistic vision. This includes researching the play's setting and characters, designing costume concepts, organizing costume fittings, and overseeing the acquisition, construction, alteration, and maintenance of costumes for all cast members. This position plays a key role in helping bring characters to life and supporting a successful theatrical production experience for students and audiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and analyze the script to understand character, setting, time period, and production requirements.
  • Collaborate with the director and production team to develop a cohesive visual style for the production.
  • Research historical, cultural, and stylistic costume elements as needed.
  • Develop and manage a costume budget.
  • Source costumes through existing inventory, rentals, purchases, donations, or construction.
  • Schedule and conduct costume fittings with cast members.
  • Coordinate costume alterations and repairs.
  • Supervise student costume assistants and volunteers, when applicable.
  • Assist with costume cleaning, storage, and inventory after the production closes.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of costume design principles, fashion history, and theatrical production practices.
  • Basic sewing and garment alteration skills preferred.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and meet production deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in theatre costume design or related fields preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, parents, and volunteers.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, lift, and carry costume materials and equipment.
  • Ability to use sewing equipment and costume shop tools safely.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.

Time Commitment

  • Attend production meetings as scheduled.
  • Participate in costume fittings and selected rehearsals.
  • Be available during technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Complete costume preparation according to the production schedule.
