Job SummaryThe Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. This role provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to an assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care that addresses the physical and psychological needs of the resident according to the care plan.
The nurse assistant is a member of the nursing team and is expected to follow infection prevention and control policies and PPE usage. Duties include assistance with basic health‑care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support. The NA assists the resident with transferring, repositioning, and walking using appropriate techniques and equipment, and also performs passive range‑of‑motion exercises.
Additional responsibilities include food preparation and dining support, serving meals and snacks, providing water and supplements as needed, documenting resident interactions, and communicating changes in resident condition or care concerns to the charge nurse. The NA collects non‑invasive bodily fluid specimens, assists with housekeeping and laundry tasks, supports wellness and recreational programs, and may participate in departmental or organizational committees as required.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16; prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of starting the position (enrollment in a training program or endorsement is acceptable). The facility provides CNA training and certification.
- Satisfactorily completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits each year. A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
- Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility and responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license. The employee must be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions of this position according to our Sanford Driving Policy.
