Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom or other learning environment by interpreting written materials and oral lectures; serve as an interpreter for teachers or non-English speaking parents as directed; perform a variety of routine clerical support duties including maintaining student records and files;
assist in the preparation of instructional materials; provide oral and written translation for students, parents, teachers, administrators and others.
Essential duties include tutoring students, providing classroom support, preparing and administering tests, assisting students with assignments, guiding students to and from the bus, performing clerical duties, observing and controlling student behavior, assisting with registration activities, and providing instructional assistance to non-English speaking students.
Knowledge of child guidance principles, positive behavior reinforcement techniques, safe practices in classroom and playground activities, basic subjects taught in District schools, basic instructional methods and techniques, correct English usage, classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct, operation of standard office and classroom equipment, oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, basic record-keeping techniques, and correct usage of English and a designated second language are required.
Ability to assist a certificated teacher with instructional and related activities, prepare instructional materials, understand and follow directions, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, communicate effectively, monitor and report student behavior, operate office and classroom equipment, observe health and safety regulations, perform clerical duties, read and interpret rules and procedures, meet schedules and timelines, provide information and assistance, be flexible to perform work within changing priorities, read, write and translate English and a designated second language, speak and interpret English and a designated second language, and provide instructional assistance to non-English speaking students and translation for students, parents, teachers, administrators and others is required.
Minimum qualifications include education and experience equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or passing a qualifying written examination, and one year experience working with children in an instructional setting using oral and written bilingual skills and experience working with people of various cultures. Some positions may require a valid Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.
Incumbents must be able to speak and write in a designated second language.
