The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Vehicle Systems Engineer to join our dynamic and dedicated Vehicle Systems Engineering Department. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who thrives on providing support of reliability, maintenance, and engineering performance of transit vehicles.
The Vehicle Systems Engineer (VSE) is responsible for performing professional engineering work that supports the repair, overhaul, evaluation, reliability, and maintenance of BART transit vehicles. This role provides engineering support for a wide range of vehicle systems, including train control networks, automatic train control systems, door systems, HVAC systems, friction brake and propulsion systems, software-based control systems, auxiliary power supply systems, and other electrical/electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and components all critical to safe and reliable rail operations.
The incumbent will be responsible for completing assigned tasks related to testing, analysis, and design changes. This work will support the development of enhanced processes and designs for the new D and E series railcars and trains.
The most qualified candidate for this position will have highly developed competencies beyond the minimum qualifications in the following areas, which will be reinforced with related work experience and will be clearly articulated during the selection process:
- Railcar Engineering Skills Required - The ideal candidate has strong technical skills in railcar engineering.
- Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Skills - They will have experience in diagnostics, equipment testing, and troubleshooting.
- Root Cause Investigation Skills - They will possess the ability to investigate and identify the root causes of major transit vehicle equipment failures using established root cause failure analysis methods.
- Report Preparation Competenc
y - Demonstrate skill in creating reports and technical procedures. - Train Control Systems Engineering - Provide engineering support for train control networks and automatic train control systems.
- Vehicle Systems Analysis & Support - Analyze and support vehicle door systems, HVAC systems, friction braking, and propulsion systems.
- Control Systems & Onboard Networks - Evaluate and troubleshoot software-driven control systems and onboard networks.
- Auxiliary Electrical Systems - Support auxiliary power supply systems and electrical/electronic components.
- Electro-Mechanical & Fluid Systems - Work with electro-mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Workshop Systems Support - They will be comfortable working in a shop environment and working with component /electrical repairs.
