Plastering entails a great deal of dexterity and speed. It involves the coating of internal walls and ceilings with different types of plaster in order that they’re ready to be decorated, and the coating of external surfaces with appropriate materials, such as cement or sand.

It also includes creating plaster work to order in workshops, requiring production and quality that meet or exceed customer expectations.

• Applies coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings, and partitions of buildings according to blueprints, architect’s drawings, or oral instructions, using hand tools and portable power tools.
• Directs workers to mix plaster to desired consistency and to erect scaffolds.
• Spreads plaster over lath or masonry base, using trowel, and smooths plaster with a float to attain uniform thickness.
• Applies scratch, brown, or finish coats of plaster to wood, metal, or board lath successively.
• Roughens undercoat with scratcher to provide bond for succeeding coats of plaster.
• Creates decorative textures in the finish coat by marking surface of coat with brush and trowel or by spattering surface with pebbles.
• May install guide wires on exterior surface of buildings to indicate thickness of plaster to be applied.
• May install precast ornamental plaster pieces by applying mortar to back of pieces and pressing pieces into place on wall or ceiling (designated Ornamental‑Plaster Sticker).
• May specialize in applying finish or rough coats of plaster (designated Plasterer, Finish, Plasterer, Rough).
• May apply plaster with spray gun (designated Plasterer, Spray Gun).
• May perform maintenance work only (designated Plasterer, Maintenance).
• Ensures production and quality of the products they install.
• Reports to foreman or lead man and is assigned tasks to be completed on time.
• Works safely and maintains a safe work environment.
• Applies shop mathematics to solve problems, plans work, selects proper tools, and measures quality.

• Must work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.
• Must be able to climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
• Must be able to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
• Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as needed.
• Must have good vision, either natural or corrected.

NOTE:

In the San Francisco Bay area wages range from $24.80 per hour for entry level apprentices to $41.33 per hour for Journeyman. Wages are determined by union scale as determined in the current collective bargaining agreement.
