Shop Carpenter

Pay rate: $25-27 /hr

Reports to:

Technical Director/ Assistant Technical Director, Master Carpenter

Schedule:

40 hours per week. Mon-Fri, plus some 40-hr work weeks will include Saturdays and /or Sundays at load-in and strike
Possible overtime will be discussed for projects if needed but is not mandatory.
We will conduct a temporary 2-week trial period at $25/hr to ensure skills, commute, and crew compatibility are acceptable

San Francisco Playhouse is seeking a skilled and collaborative Shop Carpenter to join our production team. This full-time, hands-on position supports the construction, installation, maintenance, and strike of scenic elements for our Mainstage productions and other Playhouse programming.

Working closely with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Master Carpenter, and other members of the production team, the Shop Carpenter will help bring scenic designs from the page to the stage. The ideal candidate is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, has experience with general theatrical carpentry and power tools, and brings a strong commitment to safety, organization, and creative problem-solving.

The position is primarily based at our scene shop in Hayward, CA, with work also taking place at San Francisco Playhouse in San Francisco, CA during load-ins, notes, maintenance, and strikes. This is a great opportunity for a theatre professional who enjoys building, problem-solving, and contributing to the collaborative process of creating live theatre.

• Be able to read Ground plans, elevations, and build drawings
• Assist in sourcing and purchasing materials for main stage Productions
• Construction of scenic elements for main stage productions independently and as a team. Including but not limited to :
• General and finish carpentry
• Use of Table saw, chop saw, pneumatic staplers, sanders, drills
• Metal cutting and grinding, welding and steel fabrication
• Scenic or base painting where required
• Theatrical rigging
• Sewing soft goods, drop repairs and alterations
• Electrical wirings and special effects
• Assist with load-In and note schedules in the theatre
• Maintain main stage productions over the course of the performance runs
• Maintain the backstage area of the theater
• Assist with the disposal of unwanted props and set pieces
• Assist in the cleaning and organization of the prop and costume storage alcoves.
• Assist in keeping the scene shop clean during and after production builds
• Assist in the transportation of tools and scenic element between scene shop and theater
• Assist with the installation of San Francisco Playhouse Sandbox shows where schedule permits
• Help maintain the highest level of job safety

These are preferred skills that are useful, but not necessary as a carpenter

Must be able to lift 40lbs, be comfortable on a ladder, familiar with the safe operation of hand and power tools, able to stand for long periods of time and able to travel via stairs.
