Certified Permit Technician

The Building Department is a division of Community Development, including Planning. The Certified Permit Technician position is responsible for assisting in the overall daily operations of the Building Team. Acts as receptionist; answers phone and routes calls; creates daily schedules of building inspection requests; takes and relays messages; provides information to citizens and guests; responds to general questions related to department functions;

submits various reports to the State and other agencies; assists Community Development by providing administrative and event support.

Responsible for tracking all permits through the permitting process, beginning with application acceptance, plan review, inspections, and permit closure. Duties include establishing and maintaining systems to ensure that all files, letters, reference manuals, field inspection reports, permit files, blueprints, drawings, and other data or materials are maintained in an organized fashion. Responsible for working with plan examiners and inspectors throughout the Building Team to continue to improve customer service delivered.

Operates personal computer and various software applications for word processing, records maintenance, and data input. Prepares Department purchase orders as needed to acquire supplies and materials; processes invoices and verifies accuracy; submits invoices to the Accounts Payable Department for payment.

Position requires excellent customer service, communication, time management, organization, telephone and computer skills, attention to detail, and people skills. Candidate must be able to perform multi-task operations with frequent interruptions.

Certified Building Permit Technician is distinguished by the incumbent's knowledge of internal and external public agency permitting requirements and responsibility for assignments that have greater complexity and require greater independent judgment. Must be certified as a Permit Technician within 1 year through the International Code Council (ICCsafe.org).
